Melodrama was the main type of Drama in the early 1950's; it was very unrealistic as it was so exaggerated to appeal to the emotions. They were also often known as women's films as the story lines were very much how women wanted life to be like (but would probably never happen,) it also appealed to them as there usually was a main stereotypical female character.
An example of an early melodrama is 'The Perils of Pauline' made in 1914. It is about a young girl whose wealthy Uncles dies and leaves her inheritance with his sectary until she marries. However Mr Koener wants to keep it for himself and so when Pauline is out on her adventures he tries to turn them against her.
The film was shown in 4 parts weekly and was in black and white with no sound only music.
