The Goals
Our main goal was to
produce a short film of 5 minutes of a chosen genre, which would entertain a
viewer.
As a group we chose a
fantasy drama, this lead us to doing research into both of these genres and
trying to stick or purposely break the regular media conventions that are
apparent with these two specific genres. By putting them together we have been
able to create a genre paradigm.
At AS level we created a
2-minute film, using the skills from last year we were able to advance them
while creating our film this year on final cut. We also used more advanced
technology e.g. a better quality camera.
It was important to us
that our film was not only appealing but also available to a wide audience!
Therefore we chose the drama genre element to make the film relatable and the
fantasy to make it interesting and exciting.

We wanted to follow the
professional conventions of promoting media products there for created both a
poster, and radio trailer.
We did this to ensure that
if our film was to be published than it would have already have the correct
things in place for it to be well marketed and catch the attention of a wider
audience.
We created 3 film posters.
One each. Then picked our favourite, this one being the one inspired by the
‘Just My Luck’ film poster. We used the correct font ‘Steel Tongs’ to ensure
our poster not only looked and appeared professional but would be recognised
for being the same, having the same lay out and font as most other film posters.
Our film poster is
conventional for one of a drama genre, but not of fantasy, this is as our film
does not stick to the stereotypical fantasy genre and we did not feel we had the skill or experience to
make an eye catching poster using this aspect of the film.

We created two radio
trailers, this is as we felt our film was more likely to be played in local
independent cinemas so it would probably benefit from a radio trailer which was
more suited to local radio.

However we didn’t want to
cut ourselves short so we created an extra radio trailer which we would play
out on a bigger radio station on a more national level such as Capital FM or
Radio 1 ect.

We wanted both of the
trailers to reflect not only the drama side of our film but also the fantasy we
did this by trying to create a mysterious tone on our trailers not giving very
much information away making them want to know what happens and come see the
film because they are intrigued.
We found creating a radio
spot quite difficult, this is as the usual genre of film to have a radio spot
if horror, and in years gone by the amount of them available to listen to on
the internet are few and far between. We did not manage to find an up to date
radio spot on the Internet to had to carry out further research to help us get
a better insight to radio spots.

In our radio trailer we
have used both a male and female voice.. This is as our original target
audience is females and this would be more suited to local radio. However the
films advertised on national radio need to appeal to a wide audience and very
few advertisement has a female voice, as we are trying to fit into the
mainstream advertisement for this group we felt despite a male voice not fitting
in very well with our film it would however fit in better here due to the type
of advertisement

I feel that the creation
of our ancillary texts (Radio Spot and Film Poster) are very effective, they
both stand out and will hopefully interest our target audience and make our
film desirable. Given more time I would have liked to create a teaser poster
along with a viral add... This would have given our film more of a ‘Blanket
Release Strategy’ this is more commonly seen in big American block busters as
small independent films do not have the time, money or resources to do this for
British Films however it is proven with this kind of release the film is a lot
more popular. An example of this is the 2012 Disney Film – John Carter.. It was
given poor reviews and ratings yet will have had far more viewers than a small
British film such as ‘shifty’ this is because Disney can afford to have big
releases for all of their films where as the British industry cannot.
